First Day is the first episode of Odd Squad Season 2.

Synopsis[]

Newly paired agents Olympia and Otis investigate an odd problem involving floating people, while Oscar and Dr. O interview candidates to run the Odd Squad creature room.

Ms. O's Random Slide[]

This...is what a new season looks like.

Learning Goal[]

  • Data Collection and Analysis: conducting surveys to answer questions

Plot[]

Part One[]

The episode begins with Olive and Otto as agents helping both Ronnie and Donnie. Donnie scored a goal in street hockey but he never stopped reaching for a high five. Luckily, Otto zaps Donnie with the Un-High-Five-Inator and fixes him. Olive and Otto take their leave, but unfortunately, Ronnie and Donnie get stuck once again going for a chest bump.

The screen suddenly pauses and it's revealed the case was only a video being shown to new recruits in the Odd Squad Academy. Instructor O asks his class what they learned from the video. A girl in the front wearing glasses shoots her hand up. The girl, named Olympia, answers that the Un-High-Five-Inator doesn't protect against chest-bump-itis. Then, the bell rings and Instructor O tells Olympia to see him after class. In the hallway, Instructor O states that Olympia has been personally selected by Ms. O to become a brand new agent at Precinct 13579, in advance of the original start date of the upcoming summer, much to her surprise. This is because Olive and Otto are leaving their precinct to go run their own Odd Squad.

Olympia, now suited up, is prepared to be squishinated. Back at Odd Squad Headquarters, Oscar had just sent Olive and Otto off to their new precinct. Afterwards, Olympia and another boy then arrive. Just like before, Ms. O tells them something very odd has happened. The boy introduces himself as Otis and then, Oscar squishinates both of them off to their first case.

Olympia and Otis arrive in front of an office building through the tubes. Olympia tries making idle chat with Otis, but they are interrupted by a passing duck, whom Otis cowers himself (and Olympia) from. Otis tells that he has a specific disdain for the winged creatures. Olympia regales that they're learning about each other already and then tries to do a secret handshake with him...even though they just met. A not very conversational Otis hurries Olympia along to where the oddness is. Inside the building, Hopkins is suspended in the air only a ceiling preventing him from floating up. Olympia prepares to lasso Hopkins back down with her extended shoelaces, but instead Otis expertly parkours up two nearby pillars to reach him, much to Olympia's shock.

Back at headquarters, Oscar proclaims that the entire place has been remodeled. Ms. O explains they had to clean up after the showdown with Odd Todd, and decided to make improvements at the same time. Ms. O also asks why Oscar's voice is suddenly deeper, to which he says he accidently zapped himself with the Make-You-Older-Inator. There is a new task force room, office for Coach O, and Ms. O also hired a new chef, Party Pam, to make the breakroom more fun. Ms. O then shows off the new Creature Room and tells Oscar to find someone to run it.

Back at the office building, Olympia and Otis have just tied down Hopkins, when two other voices cry out for them. They run to the window and see that a dentist and a crossing guard are also floating. Olympia says that to fix the floaters, they'll have to ask each of them questions, and if they have something in common, then they'll know what exactly is causing it. Olympia then excitedly tells that they get to make a chart to plot the victims' accounts.

A large chart is then projected onto a new nearby wall, and Olympia and Otis recount the floaters' bios, putting all the information they know onto the chart. In the middle of this, Hopkins then questions why the two agents haven't asked for their names. The dentist's name is "Dentist" and the Crossing Guard's is Marie, but she pronounces it "Crossing Guard." Olympia and Otis inquiry many details about the three victims, like where were they were when the floating started, what time, and what they ate that day, but no parallels show up. Olympia then passionately declares how they should keep going and not give up after two failed attempts. Otis then goes to ask more questions.

After a while, Olympia and Otis have made a huge chart of many the floaters details, but there are none in common. Olympia dejectedly states they've failed their first case. Otis tries to get his partner back into the swing of things and possibly get help. Olympia rebuttals that they shouldn't need help, and rips off her suit in sureness, leaving only her academy uniform (only after the outfit she had on when they finished their first case). Olympia leaves saying she's going back to the academy. To be continued...

Part Two[]

In the next part, a load of agents are packed in inside the interrogation room. Ms. O storms in and questions why the room is so full. It turns out many agents are affected by who runs the creature room and have offered to do interviews with Oscar and Dr. O (Who has offered to help find a potential candidate) Oren agrees because his partner Olaf, is a creature, a werewolf in fact. A montage then plays of all the instances of Olaf howling, now making sense. Party Pam then jumps in asks everyone to try her food and then she'll make them a balloon. Everyone else awkwardly declines, and Ms. O ushers her out.

Olympia and Otis are now in the tube lobby, with the three floaters suspended by a string. Olympia's made up her mind about returning to the academy, and says the floaters will have to stay in the containment room for now. Party Pam then passes by and offers them food and a balloon. The three floaters then remark Party Pam all gave them something to eat that day. Olympia and Otis then realize the food is what's making the floaters float, it literally made them into balloons, as in, it made them float like balloons. Olympia and Otis have solved their first case, they ask where Ms. O is, so they can officially finish the job. The tube operator O'Duffey tells them Ms. O went to the outdoor park for her lunch break...with the food Party Pam gave her. Fearing the worst, Olympia and Otis rush off to the park to save Ms. O.

The two arrive at the park, where they see Ms. O floating upwards, already in the clouds. The duo figures out a plan to reach Ms. O: Olympia will be suspended from Otis' shoelaces, eat the food Party Pam gave her, and float up high enough to reach Ms. O. They put the plan into action, and Olympia soars into the sky to rescue her boss. She does, and Otis pulls them both back down to Earth. Party Pam (and her assistant O'Duffey) give Olympia and Ms. O a hundred pound cake to cease their floating. Olympia apologizes to Otis about giving up before, and tells that wasn't what Olive or Otto would have done. Otis reminds her that everything won't be perfect or simple the first time around, but that what makes her a good agent, the fact that she is able to get past those initial challenges. Olympia and Otis then officially declare themselves as partners.

Back at headquarters, the interviews for the Creature Room have begun, starting with Agent Ohlm. Ohlm doesn't seem to understand the concept of the Creature Room at all, so he's disqualified. The next applicant, Owen, has a good resumé to make him a suitable candidate. However, he's ruled out when he says he can only start in one hundred years. After that, Orchid is put up next, but she quickly takes over the conversation questioning Oscar and Dr. O's interviewing methods, and then letting herself out.

Some time later, a dark-skinned boy is interviewed. He introduces himself as Ocean, and he explains that he has always had an affinity for taking care of creatures. To demonstrate, He releases a tiny dragon-like lizard from his pocket, who then spits fire near Oscar and Dr. O. Ocean then calms it down by playing a tune on his ukulele. Since, he has the highest potential to take care of creatures, (and since there's no one else to interview) Ocean is given the job of running the creature room.

Having completed their first day, Olympia, Otis, and Ms. O arrive back in the tube lobby. Satisfied, Ms. O sends them off to see the inside of headquarters. Olympia and Otis have finally arrived, and they perform their secret handshake perfectly, which Otis claims was an "accident." Oscar speaks to Ms. O about having found Olympia's files from the academy, but couldn't find Otis'. Ms. O reveals that Otis never went to the Odd Squad Academy, leading Oscar to question where exactly Otis came from. With the mystery behind Otis beginning, the episode comes to a close.
