Synopsis[]

Olive's Random Slide[]

This...is yellow and blue together.

Learning Goal[]

  • Numbers and Counting: estimating

Plot[]

Olive walks into the Lab, while Oscar is busy building a new gadget, the Unbasket-of-Yarn-Inator. Right then, O'Malley walks with a yarn basket head, something Oscar can immediately fix with his new gadget. After that, Olive asks Oscar if he has any Toothbrush-Inators. Oscar shows five packs of them on the wall, next to framed photo of him as a Tube Operator. Stunned to hear this, Olive wants to hear the story behind it, and Oscar happily obliges.

Back before Olive joined the squad, Oscar was a Tube Operator with red hair and everything. But as it turned out, Oscar wasn't very great at his job, he would mess up each time agents were being squishinated. So, Ms. O gave him the chance to switch to Security.

In Security, Owen yelled at him for not paying more attention to his work, and he ultimately quit when he had to feed worms to flying fish. Olive guesses this was the point Oscar became a scientist, but he quickly quells her suspicion, in fact Oscar had a ton more jobs. Including...

  • A lifeguard for the ball pit, but dropped out because he didn't know how to swim
  • A concessions person, but nobody wanted to eat his roasted nuts
  • An air conditioner repair worker, but he kept getting stuck in the air duct
  • A Segway driver
  • A kitchen assistant for Oksana...until she scared him out of the job
  • And an Odd Squad greeter, but he kept letting villains into headquarters

After hearing this, Olive then questions just how many jobs Oscar previously had. He opens his coat, revealing a ton of participation ribbons he earned from every job he's had, with a grand total of sixty ribbons. Finally, Oscar tells about how Ms. O finally gave him a chance to find his suitable job.

In a flashback, Ms. O is talking to Oscar about a shipment of juice boxes that are going to arrive. She wants Oscar to count how many juice boxes she drank in a day, to notify the shipping company on how many to bring. Oscar counts about one hundred using estimation, the skill he's learned through his many jobs, mainly from Owen. Ms. O congratulates her new assistant, be right after shouts at him to push in her chair. Except, Oscar massively flubs his task, again, causing Ms. O to fall. So, he's fired.

So, Ms. O is about to escort Oscar out, when Owen jumps in and hands his gadget to Oscar so that he can fix it for him, and so does Oren, and so does Octavia. Ms. O intervenes and asks what the problem is. Oren tells Ms. O that the agents have to build and fix their own gadgets and solve cases. He even points out that Olaf has been trying to build a Potato-inator for three years and has not been successful at it. It turns out, Oscar had been fixing other agents' gadgets on the side while he worked, and he's gotten really good at it. Ms. O decides she'll make a brand new job, to make Oscar happy to work at Odd Squad (plus, the lab was just a gift shop that no one used), and welcomes him back to Odd Squad. Oscar asks about the girl who actually works in the gift shop, Ms. O replies she'll just make her a doctor. The episode closes out with a rap song about Dr. O.
